As the fifth season unfolds, the 4077 is faced with a precarious situation when Chinese forces draw uncomfortably close. Despite the danger, Hawkeye, B.J., and Margaret must complete a critical surgery, even as the sound of bombing grows louder. Meanwhile, the rest of the 4077 are in a similarly perilous predicament, discovering that their designated relocation site is located in occupied territory. However, the Chinese forces are repelled, allowing the 4077 to reclaim their original location. A more significant shock awaits Frank Burns, however, upon learning that Margaret has returned from a medical conference in Tokyo engaged to Lieutenant Colonel Donald Penobscott. Colonel Potter inquires about Burns' reaction, to which Hawkeye responds, "He took it hard." Burns' behavior was particularly distressing, as he remained unhinged for nearly nine consecutive hours. Potter shakes his head, predicting that Burns is on the verge of a Section Eight. Not surprisingly, Klinger appears envious of the situation.
